From Stadium to Streets

Guest post by Cristian Colteanu, GE President & CEO for Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova and Lesław Kuzaj, GE CEO for Central Europe

Participation and results at the Olympics have been high on the agenda of the countries in our region since modern Olympics. We all know how many gold medals our fellow athletes won last time and we talk about how many our countries will win in London. But we rarely think about what the Olympic Games bring to the table when it comes to testing the 21st century approach to cities.

Up and Down in Davos

Guest post by Hugh Gillanders, Director of Public Affairs for GE Europe

This week, one of the world’s most prestigious events – the 2012 Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF) – will take place in Davos, a picturesque town located in the Swiss Alps. WEF is an independent international organization committed to improving the state of the world by engaging business, political, academic and other leaders of society to shape global, regional and industry agendas. The annual event brings together global leaders, business leaders and NGOs to hash out new strategies for global cooperation and progress. This year’s meeting will convene under the theme The Great Transformation: Shaping New Models.

Top Polish Leaders

The results of the Polish corporate leaders ranking, 4th edition, organized by the foreign affairs portal (psz.pl), were published at the end of 2011. Lesław Kuzaj, GE CEO for Central Europe, tops the ranking that was conducted among almost 700 Polish leaders. He has been present in the ranking since its 1st edition, subsequently strengthening his position among the first ten candidates. Due to GE’s growing market capitalization, Lesław Kuzaj dethroned Ryszard Malinowski, Vice-president of Intel Mobility Group and CEO of Intel Chipest Group, who was the winner of the ranking for the last three years.

H80, Welcome on Board

It wasn’t the presence of charming flight attendants that caught everyone’s eyes at the GE Aviation celebration, but the luscious curves and dazzling shine of the new H80 engine. Shortly after receiving EASA certification in December 2011, GE Aviation’s new turboprop engine H80 was introduced at a special celebration in Prague. Being the first aircraft engine in GE Aviation’s history that was developed outside the U.S.A. - in the Czech Republic –, H80 has been in the spotlight of Czech media.

Eco-friendly is the Name of the Game in Veresegyház

Guest post by Béla Pásztor, Mayor of Veresegyház

The end of November was a truly memorable part of 2011 in the life of Veresegyház I have been leading for more than 45 years.  A timely completion of a recent thermal project changed the life of some business entities in my city, including the GE Energy and the GE Aviation plants, and public institutions that will use cost-efficient energy for heating from now on.  The new heating system was inaugurated at GE’s plant with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

No More Excuses

Guest post by Tomáš Sedláček, Czech economist and author

CEE countries should all consider the legacy that Václav Havel, the recently deceased ex-president of the Czech Republic, playwright and former dissident, left to the region: in particular, the importance of freedom, the power of ideas and the necessity of European cooperation. In his blog, Tomáš Sedláček, Czech economist and author, calls everyone’s attention to the fact that “we can afford no more excuses and no more hiding behind the illusion that someone else will get things done for us. ... We must learn not to confuse sovereignty with stubbornness, introversion, egoistic national interests and commonplace unwillingness. Our national interest is Europe; that much must be obvious to anyone. That is anyone who can see a bit further than the tip of their nose.

Sustainable Infrastructure Path for Bulgaria

GE and the US Embassy partner in organizing a stakeholder dialogue on today’s challenges in sustainable energy, water and process technologies, efficient lighting and affordable healthcare in Sofia on January 24th.

Bulgaria’s economic performance has improved recently but, before it can start on a sustainable growth path, the country has to undergo a long process of integrating expertise, investment and technology. GE is ready to contribute to this and the dialogue in Sofia is part of our commitment to support Bulgaria’s infrastructure upgrade and long-term growth.” – said Cristian Colteanu, GE President & CEO for Romania, Bulgaria and Moldova.
