Get Active for a Greener Danube

Recently I attended a milestone event in Bucharest. GE and the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding containing an action plan for the joint protection and preservation of the Danube River Basin. Under the agreement, GE and the Commission will work together with local governments, companies, educational institutions and NGOs, applying their expertise, technological capabilities and financial support in order to safeguard the freshwater ecosystems of the Danube which are crucial to the well-being of communities.

Great Expectations for the Krynica Economic Forum

Guest post by Hugh Gillanders, GE’s Director for Public Affairs Europe

4-6 September 2012 Krynica Zdrój in the South of Poland will host the XXII Economic Forum. Every year, once the holiday period is over, key regional opinion formers, business leaders, media, government and NGO representatives gather to discuss the prospects of Europe and the CEE region in particular. With Europe currently suffering the most serious crisis in its post-war history, the Krynica organizers believe the unity, cohesion and cooperation of Europe’s member states and the Union is essential for the future of Europe. However, substantial reforms are needed to help Europe through this unstable period and this will be the focus of the 3,000 Krynica attendees.

Bright and Safe Olympic Games

The world's future is in cities – more and bigger. In 2011, for the first time, the majority of Chinese lived in cities. This fact represents a milestone in the most massive, and still ongoing, rural-to-urban migration in mankind’s history. The pattern has repeated around the world. How can we make growing cities work for their habitants? For answers, we should look to one of the best laboratories we have for testing new ideas about urban sustainability, design and infrastructure – the Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games starting 29 August.

Surfacing the past helps to get Europeans closer to each other. In his post Hungarian Deputy Prime Minister Tibor Navracsics explains why we need to understand each others’ past to reach our common future.
