The Right Energy Mix

Guest post by Ziemowit Iwański, Region Executive, GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy

Representing 6.1% of the overall value of foreign direct investment to Poland and employing more than 180,000 people, US companies have shown their collective belief in the potential of the Polish economy. These impressive figures were presented at the US-Poland Business Summit that was held in Warsaw on June 20 at the Copernicus Science Center. The Summit was a much-awaited international trade and investment event, which gathered high-level officials and private sector representatives from the US and Poland. It was an excellent opportunity not only to look back on both countries’ economic cooperation, but more importantly to draw business lines for the future.

The Economy is Manic Depressed!

„Greece is ahead. You guys just went bankrupt 20 years before everybody else,” says young Czech economist Tomáš Sedláček in his TEDx Thessaloniki 2012 talk. The independently organized event´s topic was The courage to create and Tomáš Sedláček takes the courage to diagnose the economic situation in Greece, the EU and the US with a unique wit of his own.  Watch and listen (and comment) with GEforCEE how this exceptional economist with a solid international reputation arrives to his diagnosis of the economy being manic depressed rather that just depressed.

The Next Stage

Guest post by Tom Cwiok, the editor of American Investor, the official magazine of the American Chamber of Commerce in Poland

When he showed up for an interview about the importance of the Transatlantic relations in the global economy, Lesław Kuzaj, CEO of GE for Poland, had a sheet of paper in his hand with numbers and figures. Soon it was clear to me that Mr Kuzaj had done his homework. He came to talk about a vision for North America and the EU not only in terms of great political and cultural ideas on which to build a common transatlantic future but, equipped with a solid economic argument, he presented upsides of a free-trade agreement between the NAFTA countries and the EU.

Long-term Partner for SMEs

You want to vote the SME of the year in Hungary? Are you an SME looking for easy access to financial services via the internet in Poland? You want access to EU funds in both countries? These are all ways to help the SME sector grow financially and mentally. The crisis hit the companies operating in the region quite seriously; however, they still play a key role in stabilizing and developing the economies.

Bigger is Better

Can large firms be better for economic development than small firms? As I argued at a recent conference organized by Figyelő, a Hungarian business weekly, on the topic of the role of multinationals in Hungary, firm size is a sign of past successes. This year's participants to the annually organized conference were dissecting the (co)-existence of domestic and multinational enterprises, also talking about common good and prosperity.
