A Woman Can Do More Than The Devil

Guest post by Agnieszka Miszczyk, editor-in-chief of inzynierka.pl

There is a lot of truth to the saying that a woman can do more then the devil. Women know perfectly well how to manage a team to achieve their goal. Some say it is intuition. I'd rather say it is the matter of evolution. If one claims that women are made to stay home and bring up children, then it is clear that it comes from women's innate negotiation skills, problem and conflict solving skills and the art of motivation.

Poland to Lead

Guest post Agnieszka Jankowska, Director Government Affairs and EU Policy GE Central Europe.

As you could read in a recent guest post by a Hungarian Member of the European Parliament, who’s nickname is ‘Ms Innovation’ there, history taught us that mankind can overcome crisis either by wars or innovation. We Europeans have a bad historical record of wars in the 20th century therefore we should happily vote for the second tool. But innovation cannot be done only by the EU, the government or by the business or by individuals on a large scale. They jointly have to change the European or our country’s culture for a more innovation friendly one. Who and how should make it happen is the next question you may ask.

Sub of the Tops

Guest post by Marian Lubieniecki, EDC Oil&Gas Manager

A company cannot function properly without qualified employees. No innovation can be introduced and no development can be made if people don’t want it or simply don’t understand it. That is why a good, well-qualified team is so important for every company. And here is the place for cooperation between business and science. According to the GE Innovation Barometer 2013 for Poland, only 31% of the Polish businesses claim that universities and schools provide a strong education for tomorrow’s innovative leaders, and 66% executives point out that students curricula should be align better with the needs of businesses. But business should not only demand from universities better curricula’s adjustment, but also support them and clearly say what they need.

GE Works in Poland: 20 Years in Partnership

Today GE employs 10,000 people in Poland, manages three Industrial Systems factories in Lodz, Kłodzko and Bielsko-Biala and one Aviation plant in Dzierżoniów. With GE businesses in Poland including the BPH Bank and the EDC, opportunities in Poland demonstrate a bright future for GE. It is time to celebrate, as tomorrow marks GE’s 20th anniversary in the country. GE for CEE kicks off the honoring with a special message from John Rice, Vice Chairman, President and CEO of GE’s Global Growth and Operations.

What is the Potential of CEE?

John Rice, Vice Chairman and President and CEO of GE’s Global Growth and Operations, recently visited Warsaw.   One of the highlights of the trip was an employee all hands session held at the Warsaw GE Engineering and Design Center (EDC). Topics discussed included the company’s global growth strategy and the business potential in Poland and the broader region in general.

Women in Engineering

The GE Engineering Design Center (EDC) has been working hard to get more women to work at the center and to help them in their development as part of its diversity efforts. Today out of the 1300 engineers working in the design center for various GE businesses, 174 (13%) are women. “If you like math (…) you’re curious, if you like to study sciences and figure out how things in real world work and how to make them work better, then I’d say a technical career is the right thing for you,” says a global technology leader, Jeanne Rosario, Vice President, GE Aviation Engineering in the following video. She introduces female talents and also talks about GE’s unique organization, the GE Women’s Network, that has a cross business hub in Poland as well.

Creating Technology for Global Markets in CEE

The 12th anniversary of the Engineering Design Center Polska (EDC), officially celebrated in April, is proof of the very fruitful cooperation between GE and the Institute of Aviation, as well as their joint success. Although the decision to start the cooperation was not free of some anxiety and potential risks, one can now say without hesitation that the EDC responded positively to all challenges.

Remember and Prepare

GE Company Polska and the Warsaw Institute of Aviation offer Scholarship Program to commemorate the victims of the Smolensk crash that happened two years ago.  The scholarship is financed from a special grant that GE Aviation and GE Energy funded after the tragedy to be used for a cause benefiting Polish citizens. The Warsaw Institute of Aviation matched that grant with additional funding, increasing the total amount.

Adapt to Change

Guest post by Pawel Buczek, Mechanical Systems Sub-Section Manager at the Engineering Design Center (EDC), Warsaw

The first time I heard about the Edison Engineering Development Program (EEDP), a special training program designed for fresh graduates by the GE Engineering Design Center (EDC) in Warsaw in Poland, I thought it would be a real challenge and I knew another opportunity like this might not come again soon. I became one of the three young engineers with whom the program started in 2006. Today, I am Sub-Section Manager in the aviation part of the Design Center where I lead a team of almost 40 engineers responsible for various engine lines.
