Business partners have valuable contributions to make to the activities of the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR). This was showcased once again at two workshops, organized with among others GE. The workshops were recently held in the Croatian capital Zagreb and were dedicated to sustainable water management in the Danube river basin.

Recently I attended a milestone event in Bucharest. GE and the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR) signed a Memorandum of Understanding containing an action plan for the joint protection and preservation of the Danube River Basin. Under the agreement, GE and the Commission will work together with local governments, companies, educational institutions and NGOs, applying their expertise, technological capabilities and financial support in order to safeguard the freshwater ecosystems of the Danube which are crucial to the well-being of communities.

“How can leading companies contribute to the conservation and protection of water in the agricultural sector within the Danube River Basin?” This was the main question at the Business Friends of the Danube - Agricultural Forum in Budapest recently. The Forum gathered stakeholders from 14 Danube countries such as experts, governments, large corporations and NGOs.

The conference was organized by the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River (ICPDR), which is the efforts coordinator to protect water resources and improve water quality in the Danube region. The goal of the program was to foster dialogue and facilitate transfer of know-how between countries and companies, while increasing awareness about agricultural concerns and challenges.

Since Romania and Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007, the Danube - the world’s most international river basin – has largely become an EU space. The Danube has a vital importance, as it can open EU to its near neighbors, the Black Sea region, the South Caucasus and Central Asia. The recent EU Strategy for the Danube Region contributes to EU objectives, reinforcing major European policy initiatives, especially the Europe 2020 strategy.
