Lesson 1: Protect and Utilise Your IP

Guest post by Josef Kratochvil, Director of IP Office, Czech Republic

“Europe is fighting a fierce global battle to lead the world in innovation. The US is performing nearly 50% better than the EU27 in research and innovation, but the EU is fighting back, with measures to close the ‘innovation gap’ at the heart of its Europe 2020 growth strategy. There is much variation between countries but some drivers of innovation are constant: one of which is the role of a strong IP (Industrial Property) culture“ says the European Commission in its Background on Innovation in Europe material from 2011.

Innovate or Stagnate

Guest post by Hugh Gillanders, GE’s Director for Public Affairs Europe

If Europe is to drive growth and competiveness it needs to invest in building an EU wide ‘innovation ecosystem’ to avoid what the EU’s Commission for Innovation and Research, Maire Geoghegan-Quinn described as ‘an innovation divide in Europe’. Similarly, this will ensure Europe remains competitive in the global economy. The message once again for the EU is: ‘Innovate or Stagnate’.

Innovation – The Big Catch

Guest post by Zoltán Cséfalvay, Hungarian Minister of State for National Economy

As part of my job, I often meet foreign investors, analysts and business players. When they are asked why they come to Hungary and why they invest here, their strongest argument is always the availability of a highly skilled, flexible workforce. When it comes to Innovation the key to success is more complex: in addition to talent, you need the right technology and collaboration of many players of different roots, setups and sizes. It is not about big fish eating the small ones. It is about how they can help each other to thrive in the same tank.

Innovation: Win-Win Game for Both Private Sector and Society

Guest post by Edit Herczog, Member of the European Parliament, Member of the EP Committee on Industry, Research and Energy, rapporteur on comparative chapter of the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework of the EU

Historically, either conflicts or wars or technology advancements helped to overcome a crisis. We either head towards conflicts and to increasing dividedness in the wake of the crisis of 2008, or we manage to integrate technology advancements in our everyday lives so that we can gain a competitive edge. For that, we need far more than financial tools for research and innovation. There are key questions that we need to address: can we achieve and implement a new era; can we secure the European leadership for the next decades? Can we achieve growth and create more jobs to keep our economy and satisfy our citizens being employers or employees, working in the public or private sector?

Czech Milestones in Innovation

Following the innovation roundtable events in Warsaw and Budapest, another high level meeting discussing innovation as a strategic advantage for CEE took place in Prague on 5 March 2013.
Stakeholders of the Czech government, universities, non- governmental and business institutions gathered to the roundtable event organized by GE and AmCham where the results of the 2013 GE Global Innovation Barometer were discussed in addition to the possible means of improving collaborative approach in the Czech Republic.

Who Is On the List of 50?

Innovation is far more then R&D, therefore when it comes to the list of the most innovative countries of the world, many factors are considered crucial. Productivity, high-tech density, researcher concentration and manufacturing capability are key to success - see why CEE countries got among the best 50 in Bloomberg’s 50 Most Innovative Countries list, and why some countries in the region performed better than China, Hong Kong or Malaysia.

Let’s Collaborate

Yesterday two simultaneous high level stakeholder roundtables discussed the need of a collaborative approach to innovation. The events took place at the Warsaw City Hall and in the Hungarian Academy of Sciences in Budapest which are about 600 km far from each other, but the distance did not show in the content of the debates as the results of GE Innovation Barometer connected them. Both sessions were open for media.

All You Need is… Collaboration

We are in the same boat, but are we rowing into the same direction? Financing, long-term collaboration and a vision & strategy adapted to global trends are needed to strengthen the role of CEE in global innovation. Sharing best practices and creating a lively debate are efficient ways to achieve hands-on results. These are about to happen at simultaneous stakeholder dialogues organized by GE and local institutions in CEE. The series is kicked off by simultaneous roundtables open for media in Warsaw and Budapest tomorrow: see how governments, executives, leaders in R&D and education make their mark on the region’s long term future.

Go Global Hungary

Guest post by William Benkő, president of AmCham Hungary

The era when a solitary technical creator, or, putting it simple, an innovator was able to save the world or just an industry all by himself has gone forever. Similarly have gone the days when production equipments could have been enhanced and rationalized by a bit of mending and a little invention. We are in the very middle of a new industrial revolution that not just transforms but rather changes our mindset and the way countries and regions operate and compete completely.
