Dreams Come True

Guest post by Roland Papp

Since my early childhood I always wanted to become an engineer. I have been captivated by machines, especially engines and turbines. I know I am not alone as many young boys share my enthusiasm. However I have never been an ordinary guy. I have always put my goals very high and worked hard to reach them. I was only 11 when I decided to study at the University of Cambridge. It was not just a dream, but a serious decision and I started to build up my plan. Part of it was somehow getting an insight of the everyday life of engineers and world-class factories. I wrote an email to the HR officers of the GE Power & Water plant asking for help. They invited me to an interview which I turned out to be so successful that they organized an individual internship program for me.

Power of Self Confidence and Networks

“I never used to see myself as a business person, but the GE Foundation Scholar-Leaders Program inspired me and gave me enough self confidence to start my own company, making software for some very big clients. It really changed my mind set,” said Tomas Kaczmarczyk, student in mathematics from Poland and one of the speakers at the 10th anniversary of the GE Foundation’s university scholarship program.

Remember and Prepare

GE Company Polska and the Warsaw Institute of Aviation offer Scholarship Program to commemorate the victims of the Smolensk crash that happened two years ago.  The scholarship is financed from a special grant that GE Aviation and GE Energy funded after the tragedy to be used for a cause benefiting Polish citizens. The Warsaw Institute of Aviation matched that grant with additional funding, increasing the total amount.
