Caribbean Diversity

Costa Rica, a country in Central America, has in the past seen its fair share of military conflict and  crises, but for more than a decade now its economy has been developing in an exemplary fashion.  How was it possible? . And should we in Europe consider the ‘Rich Coast’ as a best practice? Read an English translation of an article written by H. E. Borbala Czako, President of HBLF and Global Director of Ernst & Young, published in the Hungarian economic weekly Figyelő (June 5, 2012) on how a group of business people changed Costa Rica’s economic position and how diversity can improve efficiency.

Eight Percent of Israel’s Electricity Capacity from CEE

Guest post by Gergő Lencsés, GM of GE Energy Veresegyház, Hungary

Balancing the electricity grid is going to be a major challenge for economies given the growing proportion of renewables in the energy mix worldwide, and the EU’stargets of 20% by 2020. At GE, we believe one of the solutions to this can be provided by aeroderivative gas turbines. Israel is one of the flagship countries which has put this into practice and installed 12 GE advanced aeroderivative gas turbines , to help meet its urgent power needs.  The 50 MegaWatt (MW) aeroderivative units, assembled in Veresegyház in Hungary, are part of a $200 million deal for the landmark 800 MW Dorad Energy Plant. The plant is the largest, and one of the first independent power plants in Israel since its market was deregulated.

We met when she spent a few hours in Budapest recently. Ms. Pelosi made history in 2007 with becoming the first woman Speaker of the House in the US and recently published the book “Know Your Power.

Vivid q is a compact ultrasound system roughly the size of a laptop which can provide clinical data and high-quality heart images that are crucial in understanding how the heart and its individual valves are functioning. It is part of NASA‘s new Human Research Program (HRP) that analyzes the effects of space travel on astronauts’ bodies.

The Next Stage

Guest post by Tom Cwiok, the editor of American Investor, the official magazine of the American Chamber of Commerce in Poland

When he showed up for an interview about the importance of the Transatlantic relations in the global economy, Lesław Kuzaj, CEO of GE for Poland, had a sheet of paper in his hand with numbers and figures. Soon it was clear to me that Mr Kuzaj had done his homework. He came to talk about a vision for North America and the EU not only in terms of great political and cultural ideas on which to build a common transatlantic future but, equipped with a solid economic argument, he presented upsides of a free-trade agreement between the NAFTA countries and the EU.
